President Obama's Math Just Doesn't Add Up
January 14, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C.According to reports, Department of Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced that he has sent a proposal to close the Guantanamo Bay detention center to President Obama. Further, thirty-four more prisoners have been approved by the President for transfer from the Guantanamo Bay detention center to yet unannounced countries. Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins (KS-02) released the following statement in response to the news:

“Let me be clear, transferring Guantanamo Bay detainees to the United States is against the law. This is a fact that even his own Attorney General has admitted. President Obama seems to hope that if he transfers enough dangerous terrorists from Guantanamo Bay abroad, he will be able to claim the detention center is no longer financially viable to keep open. Not only is this a dangerous strategy that has seen nearly a third of ex-Guantanamo Bay detainees having been suspected or confirmed of reengaging in hostile activities, but the bottom line remains the same, no price can be put on the safety of American life.  Regardless of how many terrorists are left at Guantanamo Bay, transferring these prisoners to the United States - potentially the Fort Leavenworth area - is illegal and serves only to endanger our national security.”
