Enemy Combatants Should Not Be Released To Endanger American Lives

WASHINGTON, DC– This week, the Department of Defense released a report detailing the militant backgrounds of more than 100 of the detainees at or recently released from the Guantanamo Bay detention center. Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins (KS-02) released the following statement regarding the report:

“The Department of Defense’s report makes clear that the prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay are dangerous enemy combatants, 93 percent of whom were classified as a high-risk for reengagement as recently as last year. In the President’s rush to fulfill his misguided campaign promise to close Guantanamo Bay, he is endangering American lives by releasing this prisoners back to foreign countries. That’s why I introduced a bill that would halt all prisoner transfers from Guantanamo Bay through September, 2017. These prisoners present a real threat to the safety of Americans. It is time for the President to recognize that threat and abandon his efforts to close Guantanamo Bay.”

Items To Note

-          Congresswoman Jenkins’ bill, H.R. 4895, the Detaining Terrorists To Protect Americans Act of 2016, would permanently prevent the closure of the Guantanamo Bay detention center and halt any further prisoner releases through September, 2017.
